The Boston Whitecaps saw an influx of new young talent in 2016, and among their rookies it was hard to miss Halkyard. The 6-foot-3 cutter out of Syracuse University, uses his big frame and impressive athleticism to get open on offense, creating oppurtunities to move the disc and score. As a rookie in 2016, Halkyard posted a very impressive statline, recording 15 goals, 8 assists and 4 blocks on just 110 points played.
With injuries and inactives on the Boston roster pressing him into service, Halkyard made his mark early, tallying 4 goals, 2 assists and 2 blocks in the first two weeks of the season. Halkyard’s larger, physical presence gave the Whitecaps offense a nice balance when combined with speedy cutters Tyler Chan, Piers MacNaughton and Ben Katz. Halkyard’s impressive rookie year earned him recognition as a finalist not only for the Eastern Conference Rookie of the Year Award, but also the Eastern Conference Offensive Player of the Year Award.
