Ultimate is a sport of big moments – the long downfield huck, the layout goal, the sky in the end zone and the list goes on. Over the past four years of Major League Ultimate, those moments have been captured by our partners at UltiPhotos. In our series, Caught in Action, we look at some of the greatest moments from MLU’s history and how they have been captured by the talented photographers at UltiPhotos. This week, we take a look at a spectacular moment captured by Sandy Canetti.
Over the past four seasons, the Boston Whitecaps and Philadelphia Spinners have developed a potent rivalry, with each of their matchups in 2016 being decided by just a few points. Meeting for the second consecutive year in the playoffs, the 2016 Eastern Conference Finals was no exception, as the teams battled it out for the chance to meet the Portland Stags in the 2016 MLU Championship.
Heading into the second quarter, the Spinners held a small lead over the Whitecaps, who were still looking for their first break of the game. After both teams converted on their first possession of the quarter, Boston knew that they needed something to fire themselves up and close the deficit. After a huck by the Spinners went too long for the receiver, the Whitecaps D-line recovered the disc looking to capitalize on the opportunity quickly. With the disc on the near sideline, Whitecaps veteran Adrian Banerji fired off a long backhand huck towards the Boston end zone.
Three players, two Spinners and a Whitecap, found themselves in range to make a bid for the disc as it descended back to earth. Jay Clark, the sole Whitecap, leapt and snagged the disc out of the air for the score, crashing down over a defeated opponent. As Clark came down with the disc, Canetti perfectly captured Clark’s triumphant catch.
